New Mullet on Monday - Men Without Hats

Today's cheeky mullet belonged to Ivan Doroschuk, lead singer for the Montreal, Quebec band Men Without Hats.

Here's Pop Goes the World, from the 1987 album of the same title.

In late 2003, a dozen years after Men Without Hats broke up, Ivan Doroschuk, along with brother and original band-mate Stefan Doroschuk, reunited to record and release the album No Hats Beyond this Point. In the interim, other projects were pursued, including fatherhood and solo albums. Check out the Men Without Hats official website for all of your MWH related needs.

Lost and Found Video - Flesh for Lulu

Flesh for Lulu, a band hailing from London, produced an alternative radio favorite for the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack...

From 1987, this is I Go Crazy, a decent tune, unfortunately dated by the mention of Miami Vice.

Flesh for Lulu was active until 1992, and reunited for two shows in 2004. They are said to be producing a new album. For more information on the exploits of this band, check the Wikipedia article.

New Mullet on Monday - Violent Femmes

Thanks to my lovely sister for suggesting this one, noting bassist Brian Ritchie's fabulous mullet.

From their 1986 album The Blind Leading the Naked, here is Children of the Revolution by Violent Femmes.

At last check, upon arriving home from the band's South African tour last year, Brian Ritchie had initiated a lawsuit against singer Gordon Gano. Click here to look back at the story. A quick check turned up no new information on the situation.

Side Note: My kids were sick last week, and one of them has had a relapse, so I may be a bit inattentive again this week. Thanks again for your patience.

New Mullet on Monday - Kajagoogoo

Limahl's two-tone mullet added that "special something" to multi-mulleted new wave band Kajagoogoo.

From the 1983 album White Feathers, this is Hang on Now.

News From the Limahl MySpace Blog:

Today (February 1, 2008) we have some exciting news for you - after a staggering 25 years, it looks like KajaGooGoo will reform with all five original members, Limahl (vocals), Nick (Bass), Stuart (Keyboards), Steve (Guitar) & Jez (Drums).

The first gig has already been confirmed, the band will appear at Retrofest 2008 (30/31 August 2008). There is also talk of more gigs and of writing/recording new material. So watch this space for the latest news.

Limahl thoughts on the reunion:

"... I am cautiously optimistic until the legal stuff is sorted - but I do genuinely feel something in the air which is partly to do with the intervention of the new manager Bradley Snelling who has cut through all the old emotional baggage with an outside perspective - his role is actually pivotal. So it looks like 2008 is going to be a very interesting year - the phone/emails have been busy since this 'reunion' avenue was opened. I'm excited about performing some of the 'White Feathers' album again (the only album we made together). With the passing of time I've come to learn and appreciate what a great job Colin Thurston did on the production - which makes it even more piognant after he sadly died of cancer in 2007 - god bless you Colin wherever you are. ..."

Lost and Found Video - The The

Long before it was in an M&M’s® commercial -- 1984 to be exact -- the song This is the Day by The The, was made into a video...

Now thirty years since it's inception, The The remains in existence, with Matt Johnson as a constant presence.

New Mullet on Monday - Spandau Ballet

Wow, just when I think that all the mullets are tapped out, more of them surface.

This week's mullets belonged to nearly all the members of Spandau Ballet. The one holdout was guitarist and primary songwriter Gary Kemp, who seems to have preferred the Q-tip® look.

Spandau Ballet disbanded in 1989, and are said to have made an ill-fated attempt to reunite in 2004. In December, Waist High (via World Entertainment News) and tampabay.com, among other outlets, have reported rumors that the band has accepted a 4 million dollar offer for a one-off gig in Las Vegas.

From the 1984 Album Parade, this is I'll Fly for You.

Post-Spandau Ballet Activities: Brothers Martin (bass) and Gary Kemp have both been working steadily as actors. It would be quite time-consuming to summarize their many activities, so click on their names to link to their Wikipedia articles. Singer Tony Hadley has been involved in musical projects as well as reality TV. Saxophonist/percussionist Steve Norman is now a member of the band Cloudfish. Drummer John Keeble is a member of the Tony Hadley Band.
